What is Smart Stop?

Smart Stop is a fully automated fan brake system that provides discrete, intelligent control of a mechanical fan brake.

The Smart Stop system utilizes proprietary control logic to actuate the brake and safely isolate cooling tower fans, improving safety conditions for personnel and mitigating the risk of storm damage to cooling tower equipment.

Protect Plant Personnel

Even with the fan motor electrically isolated, fans are still able to release harmful kinetic energy.

Smart Stop is designed to control this hazardous energy and protect personnel performing work in the fan area.

Safeguard Equipment

High wind events can cause fans to spin out of control, potentially causing severe damage.

With the Smart Stop system, mechanical equipment can be isolated rapidly, from the safety of a remote location.

Safe Braking.png

Safe Braking Technology

Smart Stop’s proprietary control logic engages the fan brake based upon real time system feedback.

This optimizes braking and prohibits harmful shock loading on the mechanical equipment, regardless of ambient conditions.

Multiple Connectivity Options.png

Multiple Connectivity Options

Smart Stop can be operated through a local control panel or integrated into a facility’s broader network (DCS) through a variety of connection methods.

Connectivity can be established through digital input / output signals or through a network connection with Modbus TCP. Alternate communication protocols can also be accommodated.

Fan Motor Protection.png

Fan Motor Protection

Smart Stop will not allow the brake to be applied when the fan motor is in operation.

If the fan motor is called to start when the brake is closed, Smart Stop will automatically open the brake to protect the mechanical equipment.

System Health Monitoring.png

Active System Monitoring

Smart Stop continuously monitors the overall braking system for fault conditions that could impede proper operation.

If a fault condition is detected, the Smart Stop system will automatically notify plant personnel with a fault signal, allowing for proactive resolution of the system error.
